Types of Bone Cancer

Approximately, 2,000 people are diagnosed with bone tumors each year. All of which can be found in the United States. This kind of cancer can be described as being caused by specific problems within the bone cells. In fact, this kind of bone tumor is common in both children adolescents, while they are less common in many older adults. The type of cancer affects the bones of older adults, and it comes from another type of tumor since it can be tracked back to metastasis.

Currently, there are many types of cancer in the bone including osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, ewing sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, and malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and chordoma. Each type has a different affect on specific groups of people. Listed below are 4 of the most common types and a brief description of each.

Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma can be described as the primary malignant bone since it is the most common type of cancer. This kind of cancer normally affects boys and young men between the ages of 10 and 25 years. However, it can affect other adults as well, with lesser frequency in rates. When it is diagnosed by a physician, it normally appears several distinct places including the long bones in the legs and arms. The growth of the cancer can spread rapidly around the shoulders and the knees of affected children. So, it is important for parents to following the progression closely. This kind of cancer is normally described as being very aggressive with the potential risk of spreading to an individual’s lungs. Based on medical statistics, the potential survival rates reflect 5 years with approximately 65%.

Chondrosarcoma

Chondrosarcoma is normally described by the medical community as the 2nd most common bone tumor, While it represents approximately 25% of all or the malignant bone tumors, it is also the type of tumor that cannot be taken lightly. The affected cells tend to originate in the cartilage of a human or a dog’s bone and it is considered to be very aggressive. This kind of tumor is more common in people over the age of 40. However, it is slightly more prevalent in men. It is a very aggressive type because it can spread to the lungs and cause irreparable damage to the lymph nodes. Another area that it has a huge impact is in the pelvis area as well as the bones in the hips. The most aggressive type has a survival rate of 5 years with a 30% rate. On the other hand, if the cancer is slow in its progression, the survival rate is approximately 90%.

Fibrosarcoma

Some bone cancers are not as common as others. In fact, there is a group of cancers that are considered to be relatively rare. One of which is Fibrosarcoma since it is considered much rarer than other types of bone tumors. These tumors may be found in people between the ages of 34 and 55 years of age. Some people may not recognize the symptoms of these problems as easy since it can affect the soft tissue behind the knee in the leg. This is also the type of bone cancer that can be found in men more than women. The differences between the two numbers, however, are minimum.

Chordoma

Chordoma can also be described as a very rare tumor. People who have been diagnosed with this tumor can expect a median survival rate of approximately 6 years after their diagnosis. These tumors can appear in adults who are 30 or older. It is also a tumor that can adversely affect the individual’s spinal cord.

Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma can be described as being located in an individual’s soft tissue. Therefore, it can be found in an individual’s muscles, tendons, ligaments, and in fat. These soft tissues can be found in adults since it normally occurs in people between the ages of 50-60. People who are diagnosed with this kind of cancer have a survival rate of 5 years with rates of 35% - 60%.

Bone cancer can be slow or aggressive in its spreading to different areas of the body. Even though the survival rates vary from one individual to another, people will have an opportunity to make sure their lungs are not affected irreparably. Therefore, it is essential for anyone who is expecting problem,s to do the research so that they and their chief leaders can provide the information that’s needed.
